- A Reddit user says their boyfriend used their joint savings account to buy a PlayStation 5
- He made the pricey purchase without asking first, but claims they have no right to be upset
- Now, the user is reconsidering whether they want to continue sharing a savings account
An anonymous poster turned to Reddit after their boyfriend made a surprise purchase using their joint savings, leaving them questioning their financial dynamics and trust in their relationship.
In the post, the user explained that their partner bought a PlayStation 5 without discussing it with them first. When they confronted him about this, he justified the purchase by saying it was "not just for him” and they could both use it. However, the poster pointed out that they don’t even play video games. “I told him that spending our shared money on something only he wants was selfish," they wrote.
The boyfriend then became defensive, claiming the gaming device was “for the house" before trying to guilt-trip them. He suggested that they had no right to be upset, insisting that he would have allowed them to buy something if they really wanted it.
Regardless, the Reddit user said they would never spend their savings on something without consulting their partner first. “I said that’s not the same because I’d never drop our savings on something without asking," they emphasized. Getty Stock photo of an ATM
Still, the boyfriend dismissed their concerns, insisting they were overreacting and should be happy for him since the PS5 brings him joy. He also told his friends about the situation, and they took his side.
“He also said most of his friends think ‘it’s not that serious,’ but I feel like it’s a huge breach of trust,” the poster wrote. Given their frustration and disappointment, the user is thinking about not contributing to their shared savings anymore.

“I told him I would reconsider if I would put money in the savings again,” they wrote, noting that they had previously agreed to add money monthly for their “future life," which seems to no longer be the case.
Many Reddit users supported the poster’s stance, agreeing that the boyfriend was out of line.
“At the very least, OP shouldn’t be putting funds into this joint account until he’s made up what the PS5 costs," one commenter pointed out." OP, if he tried to pull the ‘It’s for the house’ bs again, you have to be firm.”
Another user suggested an alternative approach: “Either he reimburses you what you contributed to the fund, or as co-owner, you have the right to onsell it to recoup funds. It’s not for the house if you also don’t have a say in what happens to it.”
Whether the poster and their boyfriend can resolve this issue may depend on whether he acknowledges the impact of his actions and takes steps to rebuild that trust.
