Netflix is announcing a brand-new subtitle feature on its platform — and fans tuning into the season premiere ofYou season 5 can be the first to try it out.
According to an announcement from the the streaming service on Thursday, April 24, viewers of You — and many Netflix original series coming after it — will be able to turn on subtitles that feature only the spoken dialogue in the series' original language.
"Until now, if you wanted subtitles in the original language of a TV show or film, you'd turn on Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC), which includes not only dialogue but also audio cues like [phone buzzing] or [dramatic music swells], as well as speaker names," Netflix wrote in a press release.
Viewers can now use original language subtitles (English, in the case of You) that show only the spoken dialogue. The option is available on Netflix beginning April 24.

"So whether you're watching in a noisy room, sneaking in an episode while someone's sleeping, or just trying to keep up with Joe's internal spiral, you've now got more subtitle options to choose from," the streamer writes. "And don't forget — you can also customize your subtitles by changing the size and font."

In the press release, Netflix shared for the first time that nearly 50 percent of all viewing hours in the U.S. occur with subtitles or captions in use.
"We’re hoping this new option gives members more choice in their subtitle experience, especially as more people continue to use them," the streamer added.

The launch of this feature came just as Penn Badgley' Netflix series You came to a harrowing conclusion on April 24.
The show’s fifth season kicked off with Joe (Badgley) back in New York City, where the show began, with his wife Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) by his side and a new persona as America’s Prince Charming. However, trouble looms when Joe's past catches up to him when he begins an extramarital affair with a young woman named Bronte (Madeline Brewer), who becomes a new employee at Joe's bookstore.
You and Netflix haven't been the only series and streaming services to try out new alternatives to closed captioning. When Greta Gerwig’s hit movie Barbie hit Max for streaming in December, the streamer announced a new viewing option for deaf and hard of hearing communities.
Dubbed Barbie with ASL, the streamer's version of the movie featured a video from sign language performer Leila Hanaumi playing simultaneously in the corner, alongside the movie.
Netflix's spoken language-only feature debuts Thursday, April 24 with the premiere of You season 5, and will be available across all upcoming Netflix originals.
